The Fate of the West

In the spring of 2017 Bill Emmott’s new book, covering many of the themes of western political economy raised by the 2050 Index and by the wider work of The Wake Up Foundation, will be published by Profile Books in the UK, Public Affairs in the USA and Nikkei Publishing in Japanese translation. The British and American title is currently planned to be “The Fate of the West: The Battle to Save the World’s Most Successful Political Idea”. The Japanese title has not yet been decided. The book will take head on the arguments of economic nationalists and advocates of closed societies such as Donald Trump and Marine Le Pen.

The book will have 11 chapters, some covering thematic issues such as inequality and fairness, democracy’s art of self-entrapment, the barbarians at the West’s gates, ageing demographies and the march of intelligent automation, and some focusing on countries, including the USA, Britain, Japan, Italy, France, Sweden and Switzerland.

Once the book has been published, Bill will conduct discussions about its arguments and its analysis on this website.
